How to Cook Frozen Foods in an Air Fryer

Use package directions as a baseline, then adjust time, temperature, and basket loading so frozen food browns evenly.

Read package directions as a starting point

Look for conventional oven directions first, since they usually provide a dependable temperature and total cooking time. An air fryer often cooks faster because the food sits close to the heating element and receives stronger airflow. Rather than cutting the listed time dramatically at the start, use the package temperature or a slightly lower setting and begin checking several minutes before the oven time would end.

The package may also include food safety instructions, such as cooking until the center is hot or reaching a stated internal temperature for raw frozen items. Follow those directions even if the outside looks browned. Breaded foods can color quickly in an air fryer, while a thick center may need more time. A thermometer is useful for raw poultry, meat, and seafood products.

Preheat only when it helps

Put frozen food in a loose, reasonably even layer whenever possible. Fries, tater tots, nuggets, and similar pieces can overlap somewhat, but a basket packed to the rim traps steam. That moisture keeps surfaces soft and can leave some pieces pale while others darken. If the food is piled high, cook in batches or plan on shaking more often.

Brush away loose ice crystals or clumps before cooking when they are easy to remove. Excess ice melts into water, and water creates steam before it can evaporate. Do not thaw breaded frozen foods on the counter to solve this problem. Cook them from frozen, but separate pieces that are frozen together and remove any large chunks of loose ice from the basket.

Arrange frozen food for airflow

For small loose foods, shake the basket about halfway through cooking. This moves the pieces that were sheltered at the bottom toward the hotter, more exposed areas. For a fuller basket of fries or tots, shake once around the first third of the cooking time and again near the end. Close the basket promptly after checking so the appliance can recover its heat.

Turn larger items such as frozen chicken pieces, fish fillets, stuffed snacks, or thick pastries with tongs or a spatula. Turning is more effective than shaking when food is delicate or has a coating that could break. Check the underside as you turn. If it is still pale and wet, give the food more space if possible rather than simply raising the temperature.

Shake and turn at the right time

A small batch usually cooks faster and browns more deeply than a full basket. If you double the amount of food, do not assume doubling the time will fix the result. The crowded food needs more opportunities to move, release steam, and contact circulating air. Add time in short increments after shaking or turning, checking color and texture each time.

Use appearance and texture along with the timer. Fries should be browned at the edges and crisp after a brief rest. Breaded foods should have a dry, firm coating rather than a damp or floury surface. For foods with raw meat or seafood inside, check the thickest portion for doneness before serving. Let very hot fillings stand briefly, since the center can retain heat after the exterior is ready.

What this guide helps you understand

Frozen food crisps best when it starts separated, cooks in a loose layer, and is shaken or turned before steam can build up around it.

Check the food package for cooking and food safety directions before setting the air fryer.
Leave enough room to shake loose foods or turn larger pieces during cooking.
Use a food thermometer for raw frozen poultry, meat, or seafood products when needed.

Technique notes

Avoid adding oil automatically. Many frozen breaded foods and fries already contain enough oil for browning.
Cook in batches when a full basket would leave food piled above the crisper plate.

Safety note: Use tongs or a spatula for hot food, and open the basket carefully because steam can escape quickly.
