Let the appliance cool before cleaning

Turn the air fryer off, unplug it, and allow the basket, trays, and interior to cool before cleaning. Hot grease can burn skin, and adding cool water to a hot removable pan can make cleanup messier or damage a coating. Cooling also gives drippings time to settle in the lower pan, making them easier to pour off or wipe away.

Do not immerse the main appliance body in water. The fan, heating components, controls, and electrical connections are inside it. Remove only the parts designed to come out, following the care instructions for your specific appliance. If grease has pooled in the bottom of a basket-style unit, dispose of it carefully after it has cooled rather than pouring it into a sink drain, where it can harden in plumbing.

Clean the basket and crisper plate after use

Remove the basket, crisper plate, rack, or tray and clear away loose crumbs first. Wash the removable parts with warm water, dish soap, and a soft sponge or cloth. Pay attention to the underside of the crisper plate and the corners of the lower pan, where grease often collects out of sight. Rinse well and dry the parts before putting them back in the appliance.

Dishwasher-safe labeling can be convenient, but it does not eliminate the need to inspect the parts. Grease can remain in perforations, seams, and around handles after a dishwasher cycle. Hand washing is often useful after especially greasy cooking because you can feel for residue and remove it before it bakes on. Avoid metal scrubbers and sharp utensils, which can scratch nonstick coatings and make future sticking more likely.

Remove stuck-on food without damaging coatings

For stuck-on residue, soak the cooled removable part in warm, soapy water long enough to soften the food. Then use a nonabrasive sponge, soft brush, or silicone scraper to lift it away. Do not pry at baked-on spots with a knife or fork. Scratches can damage a nonstick surface and create rough areas where grease and food cling more easily.

If soaking does not remove the residue, repeat the soak and clean in stages rather than using harsh scouring powders. Check the crisper plate holes and basket corners carefully, since breading and caramelized drips can lodge there. Dry every part thoroughly, including underneath handles and in seams. Trapped water can leave odors or drip into the appliance when the basket is reassembled.

Wipe grease from the interior and heating area

After greasy cooking, inspect the cooled interior with the basket or trays removed. Wipe accessible walls, the bottom area, and door seams with a soft damp cloth and a small amount of dish soap if needed. Follow with a clean damp cloth to remove soap, then dry with another cloth. Keeping these surfaces clean prevents old grease from heating again during the next cooking cycle.

For the heating area, use a soft brush or cloth only after the appliance is unplugged and fully cool. Remove loose crumbs and visible grease gently without spraying cleaner directly inside or forcing moisture into openings. Oven-style air fryers may need the heating area checked more often because splatter can reach the upper cavity. If residue is difficult to reach, use the cleaning method specified for the appliance rather than disassembling it.

What this guide helps you understand

Cleaning greasy residue soon after the air fryer cools protects nonstick parts and helps prevent smoke, odors, and baked-on buildup during later cooking.

Unplug the appliance and let all parts cool before cleaning.
Wash the basket, crisper plate, racks, and drip trays after greasy foods.
Inspect the interior and heating area for crumbs or grease before the next use.

Technique notes

Use soft sponges, cloths, brushes, and silicone tools on nonstick surfaces.
For oven-style units, clean the door glass and tray edges because grease often collects in those areas.

Safety note: Never immerse the main appliance body, spray cleaner into electrical openings, or clean around the heating area while the unit is plugged in.
